DEPTH

The Youth Advisory Board is a group of teens that get together for a monthly meeting and plan activities for themselves and other youth in the community. It is a time where teens work together to better the young generation in the community and where they all get a chance to pave the way for future generations.

A challenge for rural teens here, and in other places, is that there are not a lot of things to do so kids often find themselves getting into trouble or getting into drugs. The focus of this program is to instill in youth the desire to want to better themselves and better their community. The teens have participated in many different things. They have cleaned up trash down deep in the rural roads; given up weekends for fund raisers like car and dog washes, bake sales, hosting dinners and community dances. They have participated in Shasta County Citizens Against Racism. They are always very helpful at Hill Country Clinic fund raisers. When they are not fund raising they are pulling together backpacking trips, going swimming and hiking, playing sports at open gym night, making good friends within the community and enjoying time together with each other.

The clinic and many others , especially Acorn Community Enterprises, have sponsored the YAB activities, and many volunteers have devoted time and energy into the teen group as well. Here is a nice quote from one of the amazing volunteers that they youth have beside them:
"It is a wonderful group of young people that are doing good and I am very impressed. I am impressed with their enthusiasm and their willingness to work without any gain." -Fred
