Circle of Friends Wellness Center

At Circle of Friends, participants are given hope and encouragement in rebuilding their lives.  Any person with mental health challenges and/or their family members are welcome to join us at our center in Burney for peer support, friendship, and a variety of classes and other activities. Circle of Friends is a great place to learn about resources in the community and ways in which to be involved in the community. We strive to help our members recognize that we all have a valuable contribution to make, either through employment or volunteer work, and we encourage individual strengths and gifts.

Some of the classes that we have offered and are currently offering include: jewelry, knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch, art, quilting, painting, cooking, budgeting, and computer lab; workshops on setting boundaries, dealing with loneliness, recovery, worry control, goal-setting, and depression.  Activities include a vegetable garden, movie days in Redding and Burney, volunteer work cleaning up local parks, picnics, an exercise club, and fundraisers.

Please call Lynn Erickson at 335-4222 for more information.

Announcements

Let’s begin February with a big “THANK YOU!” to everyone who has lent a hand at Circle of Friends.  A list on our white board entitled “Thank you for helping with…” is long with the names of people who have cleaned up our garden, stuffed envelopes, put together bookshelves, helped set up and clean up for parties, cleaned behind the refrigerator, wrapped presents, planned exercise classes, shoveled snow and more.  Helpfulness certainly extends beyond any list, as we’re reminded of the kindnesses often shown to one another outside of the center.

“There are many different pathways to recovery and each individual determines his or her own way” (SAMHSA- Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration).  This statement introduces the new working definition of “recovery.”  During the past year, SAMHSA provided an opportunity to comment on this definition, gathering feedback and votes from thousands of participants.  You’ll find the working definition of recovery, as well as a summary of the supports and guiding principles of recovery, on the flip side of this page.  The complete article can be found by clicking here.

We were snowed out of a few activities in January, so we look forward to the “Sing-Along with Bruce G and Patrick” and the “Peer to Peer Reunion” in February.  A new Peer to Peer class in Burney will begin April 17th.  If you’re not sure exactly what Peer to Peer is, join Corrin on February 13th to find out.  We’ve decided to host our second “Walk for Wellness” during Mental Health Month in May.  We’ve scheduled two planning meetings in February and we welcome all the help we can get!  And finally, we hope you’ll stop by for a little “casino fun” on our Little Reno Day.

Wellness activities in Round Mountain are available on Thursday mornings.  Join Corrin and Suzanne for arts, crafts, games, and other activities in the lobby every Thursday between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

We all look forward to seeing you soon, and hope you will join us whenever you can at Circle of Friends for some fun and friendship.

Please call 335-4222 if you are in need of transportation – or with any other questions.
